Hal B. Klein

Hal B. Klein is a food reporter, dining critic and senior food writer at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He has covered food and dining in Pittsburgh since 2011, reporting on restaurants as a cultural, economic and civic beat shaped by migration, labor and local history. His work spans criticism, breaking news, service journalism and long-form enterprise, with a focus on immigrant-run restaurants, legacy institutions and the forces that shape how and where people eat. He holds a master’s degree in Food Studies.

Klein’s journalism has been recognized nationally and statewide. His honors include second place from the Society for Features Journalism for The Pittsburgh Dumpling Project, a Keystone Media Award, the Ray Sprigle Memorial Award for best in show from the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania and the 2024 Master of Aesthetics in Gastronomy Award from the Culinary Institute of America, along with numerous additional regional and national citations.
